Be a part of a petition

Iran (MNN) ― You can be a part of saving a life. An Iranian-born pastor, who is a U.S. citizen, was arrested by the Iranian government on September 26, 2012. He is undergoing physical and mental torture in a notoriously brutal Tehran prison. An international campaign for his release is being shared, according to the American Center of Law and Justice (ACLJ).

On January 27, Saeed Abedini was sentenced to eight years in prison for establishing a network of Christian house churches years ago and for "attempting to sway Iranian youth away from Islam."

Since his conviction, he has not been allowed to communicate with his wife and two children who are in the United States, according to Baptist Press.

In the beginning of February, his Iranian relatives were allowed to visit him. According to FoxNews.com, he expressed apprehension and concern for his future. Abedini asked if there were international efforts to secure his freedom, the news network said, adding that his downtrodden spirit "is due to abuse and brainwashing techniques used by prison officials."

"It is no surprise that the Iranian prison guards are engaging in this kind of psychological abuse," Jordan Sekulow, ACLJ's executive director, told FoxNews.com. "We know that Pastor Saeed is undergoing physical beatings and torture. And we know there is growing concern about his health."

One of the many things ACLJ has done for the pastor is to launch a Web site SaveSaeed.org, and they are promoting #SaveSaeed on Twitter.

As of Monday (Feb. 11,) almost 195,000 people had signed a petition at SaveSaeed.org asking the United Nations, European Union, and Council of Europe to mobilize their resources to require Iran to honor its treaties and its constitution, and release the pastor.

ACLJ is looking for 300,000 signatures for this petition. That means for every day Saeed is supposed to be in prison, 100 people will have signed the petition. ACLJ believes that the more people are calling for Abedini's release, the more international media, governments, and world leaders are willing to put pressure on Iran to grant his freedom.

If you would like to sign this petition, click here. You can be a part of getting Pastor Saeed Abedini his freedom back. Also on the site are videos of Steven Curtis Chapman, TobyMac, Bart Millard of MercyMe, and other musicians and concerned citizens who have joined the effort.

Pray for Saeed as he is facing many trials in prison. Pray for his safety and continued strength to keep fighting. Ask God to give his wife and children the support they need at this time. Pray that God will use this devastating situation for growing His kingdom.

THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS (ANS) -- A petition to save the life of Christian Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani has been hand-delivered to the Iranian ambassador in The Hague.

According to Jubilee Campaign www.jubileecampaign.org  , Joël Voordewind, Dutch member of Parliament, offered the petition with the more than 20,000 signatures directly to the Iranian Ambassador and demanded the revocation of the death sentence and Nadarkhani's immediate release.

Jubilee Campaign Netherland's Board Member, Peter Bronsveld, participated in the meeting.

Prior to the meeting, Jubilee Campaign had double-checked with inside sources to ensure that Pastor Nadarkhani is still alive.
Late last week, obscure sources released information that the execution had already taken place.

The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), which has been closely following the case and undertaking public efforts to stop the execution, also confirmed that the report was false.

In a media update, Jubilee Campaign’s Ann Buwalda, Chairman Jubilee Campaign The Netherlands, says: “Whether the execution order has been issued remains unclear because of denials by Iranian authorities, although reliable sources in the country state that the execution order has been issued.

“The fact that the Iranian authorities are denying the execution order is a clear result from all the prayers and advocacy efforts from around the world. Truly, Yousef Nadarkhani is only alive as a result of the ongoing international pressure and the media attention that has been given to this case.

“Our gratitude goes out to the growing group of citizens and politicians, at this moment more than 20.000 people, who made it possible for us to visit the Iranian Embassy by promoting our website through Twitter, Facebook and by forwarding our e-mailings.”

Buwalda said that an important result of the visit to the Iranian embassy in The Hague is the invitation to Jubilee Campaign and Dutch Parliamentarian Joël Voordewind to go to Teheran for discussions and diplomacy.

“During his more than five years in the Dutch Parliament representing the Christian Union party, Mr. Voordewind has been a determined and unflinching advocate of persecuted Christians,” Buwalda said.

“After our visit to the Iranian Embassy we will certainly keep campaigning with undivided commitment! Please keep partnering with us in our struggle to save the life of Yousef Nadarkhani.”

Please pray for the release of all current 20-plus Christians in Iranian jails for their faith.

International Petition Drive to Help Pastor Persecuted For Conducting Baptisms

By Michael Ireland
Senior International Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

SRINIGAR, INDIA (ANS) -- The president of the Global Council of Indian Christians is trying to raise international awareness of the case of an Indian pastor arrested on charges 'disturbing communal peace.'

In a media update, Ann Buwalda, Executive Director of Jubilee Campaign, says that Sajan George is highlighting the case through a petition drive.

Jubilee Campaign says Rev. Chander Mani Khanna, pastor of All Saints Church in Srinagar was on November 19th, 2011 arrested on charges 'disturbing communal peace.'

The arrests of Khanna and two others came after a local Muslim clerical association calling itself a 'Sharia court' accused Rev. Khanna of 'luring' Muslims into converting from Christianity. Their only evidence was a YouTube video of Rev. Khanna baptizing seven believers from a Muslim background.

Jubilee Campaign says that after 11 days in, jail Rev. Khanna was released on bail, but the so-called Sharia court issued a fatwa of expulsion, ordering him and two other Christian workers to leave the state.

In the media release, Buwalda says: “This case represents a worrying continuation of a dangerous trend Jubilee Campaign has seen in India for some time. Over the past several years radical Hindu leaders have reacted to the massive growth of Christianity with frequently accusations that Christians are 'luring' poor Hindus into converting by bribing them or lying to them. It was this sentiment which led to the passage of anti-conversion laws in several states of northern India and led to the 2008 violence against Christians in Orissa.”

Buwalda explained the causes of this sentiment are “complex and specific to the traditional Hindu society where political and economic power was based around the caste system.”

Buwalda said: “The Muslim view on conversions is more explicitly theological, as indicated by the term apostasy. Nevertheless the Hindu response to conversions, which involves baseless accusations of misconduct resulting in vigilante killings of religious minorities is very similar to the Muslim response that we have seen in Pakistan and elsewhere.”

Buwalda went on to state: “This attempt by the Kashmir Muslims to activate the radical Hindu lobbying in support of their actions has been at least partially successful judging by the response of a high-ranking Indian official.

“Of more immediate concern is to the local Christian community is the way that the Sharia court was able to enforce its fatwa of expulsion against Rev. Khanna and the two other Christian workers,” she said.

Buwalda added that, emboldened by their success, groups of local Muslims have been pressuring the families of converts, causing several other converts and Christians workers to flee.

In response, Sajan George, the president of the Global Council of Indian Christians, is trying to raise international awareness through the petition.

Jubilee Campaign urges concerned believers to sign the petition calling for the government of India to respect its own laws and stop the unjust persecution of Rev. Khanna.

Advocacy campaign for religious freedom underway

USA (ODM/MNN) ― The 2012 presidential elections in the United States provide an incredible opportunity to advocate for persecuted Christians and people of all faiths worldwide.

Open Doors USA has partnered with Professor Tom Farr of Georgetown University, an International Religious Freedom (IRF) expert, to produce and promote the Presidential Pledge for Religious Freedom. Open Doors USA Advocacy Director Lindsay Vessey explains, "We started out working on a pledge for international religious freedom, but as we were working on it, it really became clear that we need to speak out on behalf of both domestic and international religious freedom. They go hand-in-hand."

Open Doors USA is presenting the pledge to all of the presidential candidates , asking each of them to sign it. A candidate's signature indicates that he or she commits to upholding religious freedom for people of all faiths in America, nominating U.S. federal judges who are committed to upholding religious freedom as defined in the pledge, and prioritizing religious freedom concerns in U.S. foreign policy. The complete pledge can be accessed at http://www.pledgeforreligiousfreedom.com.

Former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania is the first candidate to sign the pledge. As for the candidates representing other parties, sometimes efforts to get a response on issues like religious freedom fall flat.

Vessey says they've come up with a way to help the candidates feel pressure that comes from the voters they're trying to sway. Open Doors launched a petition drive, too. She explains: "The petition is really in support of this presidential pledge that we have drafted. By signing this petition, people are saying that they would like their presidential candidate to sign our religious freedom pledge."

Many voices on an issue get a politician's attention, Vessey adds. "We're going to let them know how many people have signed the petition because candidates are always looking for more votes. By sharing with them how many people have signed the petition, it's a way for us to demonstrate how great the concern is in the United States for religious freedom issues."

"Religious freedom is in global crisis," Farr says. "In the United States, religious associations are at risk of being forced either to abandon their core beliefs -- for example, on the sanctity of human life -- or cease operation. Internationally, 70% of the world's population lives in countries in which religious freedom is severely restricted."

Religious freedom was foundational to America and remains a key indicator of prosperity in most societies worldwide. With the millions who are subject to harassment, oppression, or persecution because of their beliefs, staying silent is not an option. Vessey agrees. "When the U.S. government is not using their authority and their influence in the world to speak out for religious freedom, it kind of gives 'cover' for the suppression of religious freedom and spreading the Gospel in other countries."

The pledge is a form of accountability. Candidates who sign it are putting their names to a promise of commitment to guarding religious freedom. Lack of support from the current administration became apparent in the latest extension for keeping the USCIRF operational. The panel advises the White House, State Department, and Congress on the status of religious freedom overseas, which can translate to foreign policy.

Efforts to re-authorize funding for the bipartisan commission are at a standstill--held up by a single Senator in the President's party. Vessey says, "The situation with the U.S. Commission's [U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom] funding just highlights that religious freedom hasn't been given that much attention. It's not a priority of the current administration. We're saying, 'We really want our next president to  focus on religious freedom and to make it a priority.'"

Support for The Presidential Pledge has been growing among Non-Government Organizations and others. A few of the groups include the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, China Aid Association, Jubilee Campaign, the International Institute for Religious Freedom of the World Evangelical Alliance, and the Universal Peace Federation USA.

Individual endorsers include The Honorable Ernest Istook, former U.S. Congressman, Distinguished Fellow, The Heritage Foundation; Dr. Richard Land, President of Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission; Dr. Robert E. Record, Executive Director, Council for National Policy; Stuart W. Epperson, Chairman of the Board, Salem Communications Corporation; Michael Cromartie, Vice President of Ethics and Public Policy Center; and Dr. Paul Marshall, Senior Fellow, Center for Religious Freedom, Hudson Institute.

One more thing, Vessey adds. "Open Doors is non-profit, so we don't support or endorse any specific candidate. Signing a pledge isn't us saying, 'You should vote for this candidate' necessarily. It's really just an educational tool for people to be able to see who is willing to stand up and say, 'If I am elected president, I will support religious freedom in these specific ways.'"

You can help by signing a petition that urges presidential candidates to sign the pledge. Please take a moment to sign this important petition at www.OpenDoorsUSA.org starting today.
